Default How would the motor run if the cam was a tooth off?

My truck makes good power (Mods in sig) but on the dyno, it only makes 394/408 locked in 3rd gear. The power curve is good but takes a dump right about 5600 rpms. It should pull to at least 6000-6200 with the cam and ported 90/90 set-up. Could it be a tooth off? I would think it would idle and drive like crap if that was the case. I know nothing about installing or checking cams or I'd check it myself. I've got the hex-adjust timing chain and the engine builder told me at first he advanced it 4*, I then told him it already had a 4* advance ground in it. He messed with it before loading it up in the back of my truck and said that he fixed it to where it was straight up. I know the patriot heads could be upgraded to something like TFS or AFRs and make a lot more power, but they shouldn't be holding me back that much. Right?

Here is a link to the other post a while back with my dyno chart:

I'd say the cam is to far advanced. It could still drive fine being off a tooth as long as there is no piston to valve contact. Does it idle steady with a smooth lope or is it choppy and uneven sounding? If the cam is advanced to much the exhaust valves will open early and make it sound like a blown alcohol motor idling. Is it possible for you to get an idle video and post it up?

I agree^^

Apples and oranges cause I'm a puny 346 but cams are similiar and I'm still carrying at 6500 on a 111+2 I just don't wanna spin higher on my 98 OEM rodbolts. I am jealous of all that torque though. Wish my 99 Z71 was a stump puller like that

I'm gonna try and get it checked by futral as soon as I get some extra cash. I can't post a video yet, don't have internet at the house and then I have to figure out how to download it and all that. It doesn't idle all that bad. The cats & mufflers eat up a bunch of the lope. It idles about the same as my old cammed 5.3.

I'd wager the cam is in at 106 intake centerline and not 110 as it should be. Probably not a bad powerband for a truck, but you're still not getting best use of the combo the way it sits.

Another thing to consider is that you are probably matching your converter stall nicely right now. Move the cam and you should have the need for a taller stall

Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely have it checked out.

I honestly don't think it will, because when I was running the stock 1600 converter, it would still just smoke the tires. When I still had the stock converter and stock truck intake, it spun it's *** off and still ran 13.1 @ 105mph with a 2.1 60'. After I have it looked at and put back on the dyno, hopefully it'll make ~410-415 rwhp and pull to at least 6200-6300 rpms. Hell thats the only reason I bought the ported FAST 90/90 setup was to help the upper rpms! In about a year when I get out of school, I'd like to get some trick flow 215s, 125-150 shot and upgrade to the level 5 FLT 4L60E

Hopefully that'll be good for a low or mid 11 second street truck.

If the cam is installed at the 106 intake centerline, how much power would I gain at the 110 intake centerline? How much would it move the powerband up? Thanks.
