Camshaft recommendations for a newbie
I am swapping a LS1 with a T56 into a S10 pickup and I have a few questions about aftermarket camshafts and such. I have a 4.10 gearset in the rear right now with the stock 7.625 rearend with a zexel torsion posi. With that said it should stand as common knowledge this thing isn't gonna live at the track and it won't have anything like a ET street put on it, maybe Nittos or BFG's. I know pushrods are a weak area in these motors, but anything else I should look for? I would like to install a aftermarket cam of some sort but I don't want anything too crazy, (a LS1 in a 3000 lbs truck will be insane enough LOL)I plan the following mods, LS6 intake, custom long tube headers, 3" full mandrel exhaust, and possibly pulleys. Here is where things get kinda shadey for me. I know of several ways to go about this but my basic question is just how good is the LS6 cam vs other cams offered by other companies on all levels performance and driveability? I don't want something that is gonna trash valvesprings every 10k miles, so I was kinda looking at something .550 lift and under really. I was looking at a few cams but I'm unsure of what I am really looking at. I was looking at a 216.220 camshaft and it seems decent but I'm unsure of what all it would run like. At the most I would like to get the truck into the low 12's on street tires. Another thing I was wondering about was LS6 heads vs ported LS1 or 5.3 heads. I know the 5.3 head is just a LS1 head with a smaller chamber. Is it worth the extra dough for the LS6 heads or not? Thanks for your time guys.

You could get some 6.0 heads probably cheaper than the LS6 heads and mill them down a bit. You will be fine with the LS1's or 5.3's P/P, they are makeing great numbers.
