There was a great test of crate engines in this month's Hot Rod Magazine.
They took a built 69 chevelle and put a bunch of crate motors in and ran down the quarter mile over a couple of days. The chevelle had a turbo 400 trans. They changed the converter and the rear end gears to match the motors. The car supposedly hooked with all the motors except one. This was one of the best tests I have ever seen.
They ran an LS7/505 - ran 10.7 @ 120.3 (w/ this motor the car weighted 3,420)
LS3/430 - ran 11.3 @ 114.2
LS327/327 - ran 12.3 @ 105.6
ZZ4/355 - ran 12.4 @ 105.6
ZZ383/425 - ran 11.7 @ 111.7
ZZ427/430 (big blk) - ran 11.3 @ 115.9
ZZ572/720 (big blk) - ran 10.2 # 128.9 (the motor that did not hook)
LSX454/640 - ran 11.3 @ 10.7 @ 120.3 (had some issues)
I thought it was pretty interesting. Kind of puts the old muscle cars in prospective.
