Default GM hotcam?

Hi, I am looking to cam my 2004 gto. I have been looking at the hotcam, and it seems like it puts out good numbers with the relatively low duration and lift. I am looking for a cam that sounds BAD, but is great for a daily driver. Another thing I like about this cam is that I have heard that it's great on the valvesprings compared to other cams. Does this sound like a cam that would work good? Oh, and the car is mostly for street, but will maybe see the strip 2-3x/year. It's an M6 as well.

Guys with this cam please chime in.

the cam has surge down low when driving and makes deacent power, If you dont have smog i would get the asa cam if you want something easy on the springs.

also do a search! there are dozens of threads about the hotcam you could read for several hours and have all the answers to your questions.

i can barely tell there is a cam there. and look at my numbers below, i only made 336rwhp/347rwtq. i know my '98 heads held me back. i want a cam you can tell is there by sound and power. so this isnt the cam for me. but hey, this is just my opinion and my experience. im not tellin you not to get it. i just want you to do research, and after all is said and done, and you want this, then by all means. i think i will be going with a t-rex or ms3. peace. dan

Don't buy just yet
If we can get some input from someone with more knowledge about this:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/974645-making-gmpp-hot-chili-cam.html

There might be an even BETTER version of the Hotcam

I would go with something a little more aggressive if I were you. I had the hotcam kit in an LT1 powered Z28 with stock manifolds and made 311/327 at the wheels on a DJ. This was a 218/228 .525" lift on a 1.6 ratio cam. I would definitely go for the common 224 cam over the hotcam as you will make better power and it will sound better too. A 224 cam will be easy on your springs as well.

He's right! The ASA cam still uses the LS6 springs and makes good power. Oh and the sound....
I made the #'s in my sig on the old tune. Got a retune @ a different shop and picked up 3 tenths and 4mph, so I dont know what the new #'s are, but they are definately up from my last dyno

I put down 376rwhp and 365rwtq with the hotcam and full exhaust. Once we got the tune right, it stopped surging and it idles with a nice lope to it. You can tell you have a cam in there.

Check out the 224 cam from Thunder racing the one ground on 112. It sounds just as good as the hotcam and makes better power.

Forgive me if Im wrong but....

Isnt a stock cam about:
196/208 .464/.479 115LSA?

vs GMPP Hotcam
219/228 .525/.525 112LSA?

I think "barely" any better than stock is a bit rude
There ARE 390rwhp Hotcam cam-only cars around!! Whether you like it or not

So do you honestly want to know where to get it cheap or are you just trying to have a cheap shot being a smarta$$ and have no intention of buying one?

So the Hotcam kit with valvesprings is $432.... and thats all you need, right?

Show me where I can get a MS3, valvesprings to suit .600+ lift and pushrods for $431

Thought so

dude i dont know whats wrong with you i was just trying to help the guy out, it would suck if he got it all put in and running then a guy running a bigger cam pulls up and he wishes he had went that route,

and no i didnt want to misrepresent the cost and get flamed on that too, i was letting you know it was the only one i found..

and leaving stock pushrods with the hotcam might be ok but its alot of insurance to throw in a set of hardened ones while your in there, bringing the cost of the hotcam to what, a hundred less than a bigger cam package that has a spring kit, hardened rods, and a bigger cam.

youtube the hotcam listen, then any other, example ms3 since weve been talking about it, and youll hear the differnce, the hotcam is mean, but ms3 is , im just trying to help the guy make the best decision to make him happiest.

Great cam for a seriously cheap budget, but you'll want tuning and full bolt ons as well. I'd also look into Futral's group purchase right now. Maybe a F11 or F13 would be a great alternative. You'll need a gasket set, pushrods, etc as well. Scoggin Dickey sells a good gasket kit for the job. If you're paying for install and tune, figure on about $1200-1400.
