Default Question on options, LS2 or LS6

My LS1 is currently a paperweight. I am going build my first engine, the question is will my heads and cam work well with larger cubes?

I have a g5x3 camshaft and AFR 205 heads and the FAST 90/90. These have maybe 15k miles on them.

If I build an LS6, I am concidering stroking it to a 383. The LS2 possibly stroke to 402/408.

I want to know if anyone has this combo or something similar, and what the difference will be going from a 346 to a 383 or a 408 with the heads/cam combo. I have heard that any increase in displacement will 'tame' a supposedly wild cam, or any cam for that matter. Is this true, or was the salesman just trying to sell? I understand there will be more power overall, but how differently will the engine run?

I have limited resources at this time as I am currently in Baghdad. Once I get leave (sometime in OCT) I will pull my LS1 and determine the extent of the damage. From there I will determine which course of action I will go with, that being the LS6 or the LS2.

My intent is to build an engine that will be able to sustain high RPMs for a period of time. I do some road racing (on a track) and want to get into Open Road Racing. With that, should my choice in displacement (stroker vs. nonstroker) be affected?

Thanks

Yeah, I want to hear from guys that have gone to a LS2 from an LS6/LS1. Trying to make the decision myself.

if your looking to drop it in and run it as long as you can ,with high rpms id stay stock stroke. if you plan on a yearly refresh of the motor id go stroker, ls2 that is. not much of a cost differnce really other than some covers and couple of wire extension harnesses. so you might as well go bigger cubes.

id price out a ls3 stock stroke with a l92 top end. i just had a stock stroke ls2 built(365) i completely forgot to price out the ls3.

good luck...

Not that I will be running at a track that often, just something I currently have an interest in. I am aware that oversquaring a motor is bad business, and throwing in a 4 inch crank will put an LS2 right on the line.

I never thought about the LS3. I am about to look it up. I did see that the LS2 is about $250 - $300 cheaper than the LS6. Doesn't seem to make sense to me. Would be pretty cool to be one of the first guys with an LS3 in an F-Body...

For those of you that are interested:
Bore (mm) Stroke (mm) Displacement (CI) Compression
LS1 99 92 5.7L (345.7) 10.1:1
LS6 99 92 5.7L (345.7) 10.5:1
LS2 101.6 92 6.0L (364.1) 10.9:1
LS3 103.25 92 6.2L (376.0) 10.7:1

The LS3 with a 4 inch (101.6mm) crank = 415.28 ci
The LS2 is 402.112 ci with a 4 inch crank.

I pulled these numbers from 'How to Rebuild GM LS-Series Engines by Chris Werner. I have a few manuals from SA Design, this being one of them. Filled with pics and tips to help through a build. I may be a nerd for reading them, but over here with my job being as boring (thank God) as it is, I almost do nothing but read books or manuals.

Now all I need to do is check the price on the LS3. If it's anywhere close in price to the LS2, I may go that direction.
