It is as much to build one as you can buy a short block ready to go from one of the sponsors. 383 short blocks go for about $3999.00. I have a little less then that in the one I'm building and it took a lot of time and head ache. If I had to do it over, I would have just bought one ready to go, with a warranty.

I agree, I was in the same shoes as OP, for budget reasons I went 370 from LME. I am glad I did. for 100>150$ more (over 383 cost) you can go 402/403 and benefit from the cubes

I wanted to stick with a smaller alum block for weight purposes, guess I should look into forged short blocks then...

You can save yourself the cost of a block by going with a 383. Thats $700 right there.
The rest of the cost is the same. If you have to ship you block out to have the 383 built for you then you add in the cost of shipping to and from.

We can build a 408 for you with Callie crank and rods, Wiseco pistons for $4474.
IF you send me your block I can build a 383 for you for $3800. The 408 will make more power and is the better bang for the buck as well as being the best choice for FI. WE can do a $370 instead and save you some money on the cost of a crank but it's not much of a savings after all is said and done. The 408 is the way to go. $400 dollar difference is a drop in the bucket when you talking about FI and a $3800 short block.

But you want to stay in aluminum so either have yours built into a 383 or if you step up to a LS2 your adding $1000 to the cost, and LS3 your adding $1400 of the build over the 383.

save about 500 over a 383, Your saving on the cost of a crank as well as a block, but the crank cant just got straight in so its not full price of a crank savings.

I thought a 370ci was the most favored setup for FI vs a 408 or something with a longer stroke? There should be a write up made on basic rotating assemblies and blocks and which ci is better for what setups and what have you.

Good info Blanco..

370 was favored because it was cheaper to build. Bigger is always better and will make more power.

Interesting
Im in the same boat. Trying to decide if either forging my stock block or stroking it to a 383 Im also adding a D1-SC, (and maybe some 205 AFR's, depending on budget) but since I see lots of good number w/ NA 383's Im thinking I might be going overboard w/ my build for a weekend cruiser w/ no track time that I was aiming on 600hp/ w a safe amount of boost, say 8-10lbs

Sorry

I was originally going to buy a 383 short block but decided I wanted to step it up in ci's. I am very happy with my 402 LS2 puchase.

There are plenty of shops who build them for less, that is not an issue
We use premium parts as a standard, we can build it for less using cheaper internals and do for customers on request.

I use Callies or Carillo cranks, wiseco or diamond pistons, and callies or scat h beam rods with clevite "h" rod and main bearings.

You dont get much better than that.....

We sell an LS1 383 outright for $3650, no need to ship us your block or anything. If you want even cheaper you can go to an iron block 370, or a forged LS1 for $3000-$3100. There are some great deals out there!
