Default 12 pt or 6 pt head studs?

Ok so what does saving $20 lose me in the quality of the studs??? Something about hex nuts or 12 pt, but the question is what's the reasoning for having the more expensive one?

Car does not run nitrous or deals with FI.

No idea, but keep in mind you can't install remove 12pt bolts without a 12pt socket...

But you can install a 6pt bolt with a 6/12pt socket.

It's not really a big deal I don't think, but I'm not really sure the just of it.

The 12-point makes it easier to get a socket on the a bolt head in a tight spot, plus there's more contact with the inside of the socket when you tighten, less chance (or practically no chance) of rounding off the bolt head.

I went with the 6 pt, because I had deep 6pt sockets & not deep 12pt's.

Also like said, you can use a 12 pt socket on a 6pt nut, but not the other way around.

Torque is supose to be more evenly spaced on the 12pt's, but I don't know if I really believe that.

Funny you mention that, my header bolts are 12-point/ 8mm, and I didn't have 12-point deep sockets 1/4" drive. And my 3/8" drive starts at 9mm and no 12-point deep sockets there either. Something to consider.

I literally just pulled the heads off the bird today, I was glad I had a 12pt socket doing it. Things would have been a much bigger pita without it. Breaker bar positioning ftl.

Exactly, I just did a cyclinder head job this week and I wanted to use my heavy duty deep socket (for air tools) with my breaker bar but it was too much of pain getting the socket on the head bolts, especially the rear bolts, so I ended up using a 15mm 12-point. It made life so much easier.

Yeah, I used a 13mm 12pt for ARP bolts, but let me tell you it is a ******* pain in the *** to take heads off with Kooks LT's still in place. Especially if you're doing it by yourself. But it can still be done. lol

I think so long as you make sure you have the socket all the way down, you wont have any rounding issues. A 12pt socket might work a little on a 12pt bolt to I suppose.

Wow, you pulled your heads with your Kooks still installed. I thought I had it tough. I removed my shorties because I was installing ARHs and it was still a pain removing some of those header bolts. It was tough getting leverage. I pulled a muscle in the center of my chest. I found it a lot easier installing the new heads than pulling the old ones.

But yes, the point is, as I mentioned earlier, is that it's easier getting a 12-point socket on a bolt than 6-point in close quarters.

Yeah, today made me wish I was running shorties so I could have easily taken them off! My kooks y-pipe doesn't like me so I chose to leave them in place. For the fear of not being able to get them back in place without taking the bitch to a muffler shop lol. It just doesn't fit well at all.

I hear ya. It sounds like it worked-out okay for you even though you struggled a little more with the header bolts. Congrats!

I just finished my head and ARH swap today. Took it for a test ride and I can't get the grin off my face. I haven't even tuned it yet. I was chirping the tires all over the place and I wasn't even trying. It was a tough install, but so worth it. I got the 4.11 gears too so I'm having a blast.
