Default Too big of a cam?

I called TR and talked to a guy named Shane who was very helpful in helping me spec out a custom grind cam for my 383. He says its great and they're running the same grind on a customers car now that is making great numbers but IMO, the cam seems huge and I want to know if its going to move my power curve too far up the RPM range. Specs are 247/245 .652/.620 110LSA. Motor is 383, stock bore, 11.1 CR, ported stock heads, 85mm PP intake and TB. I don't mind having to wait till 3.5K or so for the power to come in, but anything over that just doesn't really appeal to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

i think it would be alittle big for a 383 but i guess it depends on your goals. that cam will still make decent torque but still be way short compared to something like a 240/244 cam. it also probably wouldn't peak till 6300-6400 just guessing so you would probably will have to shift around 6700-6800 to get peak performance. hit up predator z or patrick g and see what they say. tell then what your goals are . what are your goals anyways ? any flow numbers on your heads ? what intake are you going to be running ?with a mild build with just a decent set of heads and an ls6 intake a mild cam would probably work alot better than a monster.

is your car a track only car? 4000+ stall 4.10 gears? its fine..if its a street car 90% of the time..i would say its way, way to big.. check out a vrx5 cam or similar- tons of low end grunt with a 3.42 rear

If anything I would say it's still a tad small.

Car is 90% street car, but is still a weekend only car. M6 with 4.10's. I'm already making good low end torque with the stroker but my higher rpm HP #'s were very disappointing with my last cam and it quit making power at 5800. I'm looking for a little more mid range and top end without sacrificing too much torque down low. And sorry no flow numbers on the heads.

It was an F13 that was in the car when it was stock bottom end. I built the motor due to a spun bearing so the car was built on a tight budget and I reused the cam. The car made 401/420 with the F13 and I was very disappointed with that. Now I am replacing the F13 b/c it has a scarred lobe thanks to a failed lifter.

IMO that cam is about right for a street car. If it was my car I would go way bigger, you have more cubes to soak up the duration, and people are running cams bigger than that in 346's.

Let us know your results.

I have a PP 85 mm to help mid range and I am getting more cubes as well. I have a 3500 stall as well. I was told to stick in the 230s but you are an M6 so I think you can go a little bigger and be happy. You will need a spot on tune to make everything work for you though. Good luck.

A friend of mine is running a MS4 (239/242) and makes 47x rwhp. Not sure of the torque. He runs high tens N/A and sprays into the nines. Has pretty good street manners too.

I think something in that range would work nicely for you.

I'm using an MS3 in my 402 and have great all around power w/ great driveability using ported 243's though. That cam spec (247/245 .652/.620 110LSA) has too much lift and duration for those heads and the Intake duration is too much for your Manifold IMO. I would do something like the MS3/MS4 or somewhere around those specs (236/242). You should get your heads flowed and spec that cam for your heads to get the best results.
