Default Using '98 Heads on an '02 - What Parts Will I Need???

I've got a nice set of new ported '98 heads that I'd like to use on my '02, what parts will I need please?

Do I just need a pair of perimeter bolt hole valve covers only, or are there other brackets & hardware I will need to buy?

And would I still use an 2001-2002 part number when buying headers?

Many thanks for your help,

- HPJ -

Can't answer all your questions, but you will need the perimeter bolt valve covers of course. You won't need your old coil mount brackets as the coils bolt right to the valve covers on the old 98 style.

Coils are all the same. No problem there.

The PCV vent line on the driver's rear side of the valve covers is a little different. Just look at it close. You may need to get the plastic push-in fitting (98 specific) that goes there to attach the PCV hose.

The 98 exhaust manifold is specific to the 98. It's also inferior as far as flow is concerned. I would not use it.

Your newer cast iron manifolds will work fine. Of course, headers is the ONLY way to go.

No EGR valve on a 2002, does that present any problems using the '98 heads and/or the '98 valve covers??

EGR has no effect on which heads or valve covers you use.

Nothing on the heads or valve covers connect to the EGR system.

Is there any reason(s) I might not want to use '98 heads on an '02?

If '98 heads are A-Ok to use on a 2002, are the perimeter bolt hole valve covers all I will need to be able to use these '98 heads on my '02?

Nothing wrong with ported 98 heads. Make sure you use the graphite type GM head gaskets with them or they will leak. [DON'T] use the GM multi-layer gasket.

I explained the parts you will need in my post above.

Maybe someone else can chime in. I just told you all that I know.

If you want to use the MLS head gasket then you have to weld in the "notch" that is cast into the 97-98 heads. How do I know? I just had this done about 5 hours ago. Bought a set of used heads that were supposed to be 99 and when I took them out of the box I noticed the infamous notch. I prefer the steel gasket so I chose to have the heads welded. Other than that sounds like you are good to go.
