Question Typical Engine Rebuild Cost

What does a typical engine rebuild cost? vauge question i kno; here is what i had in mind:

I want to keep it simple; stock CI, and a forged bottom end. I also want the block machined and all that other ****. i want to use my origional block b/c is no reason (i can think of) to getting a short block; nothing is wrong with what i have.

what does a rebuild like this go for; am i in over my head, is it more then i think?

It really depends on what rods/pistons/rings and bearings you go with. What are your goals? Do you want Eagle products, or want to step up to Callies or another more expensive brand?

Well you're in a dilemma it seems. If you have the motor out and you want to forge it you may as well bore it to 3.905 and have it line honed. But then you will want bigger heads and a bigger cam and a bigger oil pump and a bigger clutch and a lighter flywheel. The list goes on and on. If you seriously want to stay completely stock CI then I would estimate an easy $2,000 including the machine work, pistons, rods, bolts, bearings, and rings. Once you start adding in heads and cam and studs and clutches and flywheels the price starts to go up considerably. All in the name of speed

I can tell you if you think it's gonna be $3000 have $5000 on hand. I started out to do a h/c package and had to replace a lot of stuff. First off the motor had problems so I got a new shortblock from WRE then clutch, waterpump, bolts, and my h/c project grew into around an $8000 project.

I called around to a lot of sponsors and asked what it would cost to take my motor out and do a complete rebuild with forged products. and I think it was around $5k.

Question

i have 3 different ideas:

#1 - rebuilding my motors with all forged internals (crank, rods, pistons, rings, ect); having it machined, replace the oil pump. I was going to get the stock heads ported and add a S/C cam so i could add a Maggie.

#2 - rebuilding my motors with all forged internals (crank, rods, pistons, rings, ect); having it machined, replace the oil pump, so i cam have a nice H/C/I setup.

#3 - Just buying a drop-in crate motor (SLP ZL402, ect).

I'm just looking for the most bang for the buck setup; if you're saying +/- $5K to just rebuild the motor (not counting the rest of teh ****), it isn't worth it when i can get a crate motor for a 3-4K more with a warranty. #1 is out b/c it would end up being damn near $20K for just the motor.

I'm keeping my SS; i just want to do more to it but i dont want to end up in a "hole", I want to keep it some-what simple and the cost for the motor >10K (i still need a rear, and tranny). This wont be for a while (few yrs), i'm asking b/c i want to get an idea of what my options are and to see if my goals are realistic. I dont want to buy parts, say a FAST, for my current motor (w/ 90K miles) when i might end up scrapping it for a crate b/c it ends up being the best idea; you guys understand?

I'm just confused on how i should be thinking and what route is best for me. This car is a weekend crusier and will see the tracks every once in a while.
