It is usually recommended when you do a cam swap because you are already pulling the front of the motor apart so its a good time to do it. A lot of times people like to go with a Ported pump with a stiffer spring which helps raise the oil pressure up. Some of the 98-00 pumps are pretty weak and after some miles start only making 20-25 psi of oil pressure at idle. You can go with an SLP pump or a melling or companies like Texas speed have them too that are basically LS6 pumps that are ported with the stiffer spring inside.

If you pull the pump, throw on an LS2 timing chain too ($20).

im think of running ported ls6 heads, i want to freshen up the motor it has 82000 miles on it and i wanted to change out the rings and bearings. i have also thought about changing out the rods and pistons but that like $1200. so i dont know if it is worth the money seeing is that im never going to spray it. and i heared the bottom end is go to 400-500hp.

Unless the car has been ragged on alot, 82,000 miles really isn't that many miles to worry about rings and bearings especially since you are not going to be using nitrous . Is the oil pressure good and does the engine smoke at all ? I would do a compression test to see what kind of shape the rings are in first and if possible do a leakdown test as well . If all that checks out, I would install a new oil pump and a ls2 timing chain if you are changing the cam along with new ls7 lifters when you install the ported heads .

My $0.02, I'd change the pump since the mileage is 80K+. Swap the chain at the same time too

will it is an ex-cop car, have good oil pressure and it doesnt smoke when i start is. i had planed on pulling the motor because its my second car. so you think doing the bearings and rings is a waste of money?

Well if it was my car and the oil pressure is good and no knocking sounds and it has good compression, I would do the recomendations in my last post and go have some fun with it . I would wait for rings and pistons and all the rest until it is really needed . Meaning when you are ready to do a complete rebuild with forged internals .
