what does a spun rod bearing sound like?
...I have a "click-clank" noise coming from the #2 piston area....pulled the valve cover and rockers/springs are ok....does a collapsed lifter male a sound like this?...it goes away with higher rpms....but is pretty loud at idle...

Mine in the buick 3800 went "CHING-PLOOP-RAKETTA-RAKETTA-RAKETTA" ...and didn't stop. But that's because it literally spit the bearing out the side of the journal, and it dropped in the bottom of the oil pan.

OK, I pulled the 408 and took the oil pan/windage tray off....nothing looks bad or wrong ? No metal shavings, no bearing sticking out, nothing that would indicate a spun bearing!...I'd prefer not to remove the rod caps....but know it is probably the absolute correct thing to do....the other possible culprit would be the collapsed lifter....
Let me go back over the event timeline with you before asking on next steps:
1- Knocking/clickety-clank noise coming from top of the engine, seemingly from around Cylinder #2, but could not get stethoscope to confirm anything ....
2- I listened to alot of sound clips from guys with spun rod bearings...my sound was similiar, however I didn't feel the pronounced "thump" from the bottom of oil pan.
3-pulled engine to be sure. while removing engine, noticed a blown header-gasket on exhaust port #2. Continued to pull engine since the noise sounded a little more substantant than just a blown gasket.
4- Engine is on the stand, removed oil pan, everything looks fine....no metal shavings, nothing different/wrong with the rods/bearings. By the way, I installed new bearings for the rods when I put in my new Wiseco pistons.
What next step would you (anyone on LS1tech) do?.....I'm thinking of pulling passenger head to get at the lifter(s)...

I have heard blown header gaskets that were terribly loud at idle and might have sounded a little like a rod knocking...But usually would have gotten louder with RPM to...I say your on the right track pulling it out might as well tear it down at least the bottom end

Oh and Stroker2112.... If you listen to those clips you will notice a very noticable difference in the speed of the knocks the bearing is a rapid knock while the lifter takes a bit of time inbetween since the cam spins half the speed of the crank.

mine wasnt that bad from cold but as the engine warmed a rattly knock could be clearly heard around 1500-2000rpm, sounding as if from the side/toward the top of the engine. nothing showed up on the valvetrain and when the engine was stripped the crank was scored on 2 bearings which had started to break up.
