High mileage junkyard LQ9 for $100, worth it?
Just wanted some opinions here. I can get a LQ9 that will need a rebuild for $100. Is this something I should go with? Or should I wait on a low miler? I have looked around and I will be paying around $1000 for a low miler, can I rebuild the cheap one and get a better motor in the process for around the same price? Or will I get into something that will be expensive and not as good in the end?
Please help, thanks

I would buy the one for $100 that way you know everything is new but i think it may cost a little more than $1000 to get it rebuilt but that is better than buying a $1000 motor that you don't know how it is and then have to spend another $1000 to get it rebuilt.

The guy says that it was in a denali with 160000kms, I'm in Toronto. I guess the cat got plugged and the owner drove around for awhile like that. He says the #6 and #8 cylinders don't have compression, which he thinks is because of the rings failing. It is a complete motor, intake, tb, front cover, heads, everything.
I'm putting it in a 72 camaro. I would like to put L92 heads, a gmpp LS2 carb intake on it, a cam and headers. What would the best way to go about rebuilding it? Can I just replace bearings and rings or would I get new pistons, get the crank done and all that? I know my way around a motor but I have never done a full rebuild
Thanks for the help guys

The block alone is worth a few hundred dollars. I'd say around $3-500. The 317 heads are worth $175-250, etc.... If you are only buying this for $100 it is a no brainer.
I bought a 36k mile 96 LT1 engine a while ago for $200. I've been parting it out and have made at least $400 in profit.

Thats right at 100k miles for all you american guys...i'd pick it up for sure. likelihood that anything is wrong with the block is slim. if you aren't reusing anything but the block and you pick up the whole longblock for 100 bucks...you can definitely build a sick motor.

Haha thanks for the replies.. I did end up buying the motor. It's at a friends shop right now. He's checking it over to see what I'm in for. I was thinking of putting the L92's on it but the 317's are in great shape. Is it worth it to keep them? I want to stuff a good cam in it and go with an edelbrock carb intake.. I'm replacing the 350 in my 72' Camaro and I've already dumped the budget into the car so I can't really spend much more. But I really don't want to end up disappointed with the 317's and have an intake and cam that won't work with the L92's..
Any advice?
What kind of numbers do you guys think I would be putting down with the 317's, a cam and the intake?

shave the 317's and run them til you have some money to play with. I've seen closer to 400 hp on shaved heads a good cam and carb set up on the stock low compression lq4. the most I've seen the heads shaved to was .04 which bumps the compression nicely.
