Default front crank seal leak help

I'm finding it impossible to stop my front main from leaking. The first time I assembled it was on a stand. Pressed the damper on, then tightened the bolts. The bottom surface was well within .020" of the pan rail on the block. -Leaked like crazy.

Second time around I did it in the car so the oil pan was still on. Had dowels to center the cover on the crank snout but this didn't work either. The leak was less but still not good.

So now I have access to the GM tools to align the cover with the crank as well as the pan rail. How do you guys do this in the car as if just doing a pan swap? I don't want to pull the engine for this so I can get the pan of to use the bottom alignment plate.

The damper has absolutely no nicks or abnormal wear/grooving.
