Default LS2 Starter fitment/gap issue?

Hey All,
I need some help/confirmation on starter fit. Take a look at the pics and notice the gap between the starter and block plate. In the 1st pic, you can see the nose cone passing through the block plate. I got the engine used and did not see the bell housing, so I'm not sure of the configuration. Is it missing a shim? I would hate to get this installed and then crack the starter mount.

Background info:
2005 GTO LS2 (purchased w/o bellhousing)
Lakewood bell housing with block plate
mitsubishi starter M000T85582

Thanks,
Chan

Are the bolts suppose to be off-set like that? I'm using a 6.0 starter from a truck and I'm sure the holes are lined up.

I feel you have the wrong starter.

I was just having issues as well. I have the same gap there. My problem was that there was too much gap between the end of the pinion and ring gear.
The starter bolts are offset like that. Make sure that you check the tooth backlash since the engine is out and it is easy to do.
