Default Head gasket thickness for LS motors

Anyone making a .020 thick head gasket for the LS series?

Cometic will make them for you, but that seems to me like it's going to get the quench way too close. You would be better off with the quench around .035.

You can't just guess, check how high your pistons is above the deck first. Mine are .010, others are different. With my .010, I was able to use .045 so my quench is at .035.

PTV clearance is also a concern. You can't just put thinner ones on without knowing the effects on the whole package.

OK..are you saying that the LS series of motors aren't down in the hole .025 like tradational SBC. On a uncut deck, that is.

This is the information I'm looking for.

There is nothing traditional SBC about these engines save the roller lifters and the rod bearings. You will have to measure. You cannot use old school SBC thinking when you work on an LS. It wont work.

and contrary to what LTbird posted, most LS engines have the piston in the hole, but you have to measure because the spec from GM is too broad

Funny, most every one we've seen come through here has been out. And LTBird has a pretty good handle on this stuff. He works for a fairly reputable company (in my eyes still anyway!).

Am I understanding this correct. That the piston is sticking out of the hole from the factory on some blocks? Wow! Did not expect that!

Yes, and if you gave them an average, it would be in the neighborhood of .005-.007" out.

This is incorrect. As stated directly above average is .005-.007 OUT of the hole.

They're make us virtually anything we want...but the shelf stock thicknesses are .040", .045", .051", and .060". We stock the 4.085" bore gaskets in most every thickness listed all the time

I was not aware that the LS1 had a positive piston deck height either.I always thought it did not protrude out of the cylinder.

over the yrs. i have measured from .005-.012. from various engine displacements. the iron truck engines seem to have the most consistent measurement at around .009 out the hole.

Exactly the reason we always keep just about all the major sizes in stock! Who wants to wait 2-3 weeks for a gasket when that's all you lack putting together a combo!!!
