Default LSx block, stock main bolts vs studs and additional machine work needed

You know...sometimes I just get annoyed at certain things. Already spending the $2k on the block is fine, but every one has needed additional machine work to get it ready to assembly, not nearly as good from the factory as I would expect. My machine shop bill has been definitely excessive for every LSx block ive done.

Of the several LSx shortblock builds ive done, everyone then gets a set of ARP main studs, then pay to have align honed for them...theres another $300+

I asked the GM head engineer that said he actually did the design on the LSx block at the sema show..and he says the LSx main bolts would be fine for ANY level of power and with the dowel located main caps and 6-bolt design, it was pretty much a waste of money....

Hmmmm

All of the aluminum (ls2's and ls7) I have done have not needed any additional machine work. Dimensions were great compared to the sbc blocks I have built. I have not worked with any iron blocks.

99blanco: What problems have you seen on your lsx blocks? Weve seen all kinds of wierd stuff so far. Even like untapped holes for oil galleys and fitment for other random stuff.

The first one we did cost a fortune in machine work, our machinist put a ton of extra hours into it.

Thats about par for the course, Erik has some real nasty things to say about it... But when we're finished we're talking about an engine that can handle making 2000 hp so it's a trade off I guess. Our LSX engines arent cheap for that very reason. Lot of machining goes into it and Erk has to work his **** off to get it right.
