Decided on a LS3.. what parts from my LS1 can I swap over?
Ive decided my new build will be a LS3... are there any parts I can reuse from my current LS1 during the build?
Namely bolt on externals... like WP, LS6 valley cover, etc?
Im not sure if its been asked before, can I use my 6.0L heads with the LS3 or should I just go with a new set of LS3 heads? Im assuming no since there are, from what Ive read, different pushrod setup in the LS3.
Thanks....

i just finished mine.
Texas Speed has a conversion kit, as well as other vendors, for ls1 to ls3. it has ls2 valley cover, ls2 timing cover, knock sensors and cam sensors extension harnesses, lifter trays, etc.
you can reuse your water pump (i am), your heads, the intake you have for them, plugs, plug wires, all the peripherals. anyhow, this is just the gist of things you can reuse.
hope this helps.

that all depends on your goals. i know, the dreaded statement. lol
they will work. if you port them, they'll work better.
ls3 heads are good, and you also have to get intake. then, if you want to go FAST, like most would recommend, then you have to put this in the mix for consideration.
i did a lot of research, and i knew i wanted to stay cathedral style heads, as an example. lol
good luck! and hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. My goals were to use what I have as much as possible IF it works as good as going with LS3 stuff. However, I have read here that for goals above 800rwhp that you should go with aftermarket heads with thicker deck.

whaw! 800rwhp!
you mean business!! lol
aren't the 317 a good set for FI? i.e., thicker deck?
if so, then, you are on the right track. get them ported, and FI it.
look forward to your results.

Youre right... everything else Ive read shows the LS3 heads out flow the 317s but with the thinner deck on the LS3s I think it would be beneficial to stay safe and work up the 317s. Ive had great luck with the 317s stock..... with the stock bottom end, 12psi, custom cam, meth.... 651rwhp on a dynapack dyno.
I think Ill go with the 317s, all ARP stuff, good gaskets... with a LS3 block with all the goodies (forged internals). 800rw is my goal... hell maybe more we'll see.
