Default Reluctor Wheels?

I have been trying to look around and am wondering what requires the change from a 24 tooth reluctor wheel to a 58 tooth or vice versa. Also is there advantages or disadvantages to either? Thanks in advance.

It really comes down to which GM PCM or other controller you will be using to run the engine. If it's a GM PCM, you just run the wheel it wnts and call it a day. Some of the aftermarket engine management systems allow you to control either the 24 or 58x at the click of the mouse.

I have never seen any imperical data that proves any advantage or disadvantage of one over the other.

Like Matt @ Texas says...its about the ECM or PCM and or trans combination that needs to be run.

LS1 PCM's are 24x & the LS2 E40 ECM is 24x and run a 1 pulse per rev cam. From 06 onward GM switched to a 58X crank with 4X cam and in the main an E38 or E67 ECM is required. 06 onward auto trans's will generally only run with a 58x setup: especially the A6.

They stated 58X was needed to meet emissions standards but the 24x is a pretty smart setup anyway but maybe could not meet misfire detection requirements which are tough to meet especially with manual trans'. The 4x cam setup is mainly so they can run VVT cams.
