high volume truck oil pump w/ shallow pan?
what are the downsides to this? wouldn't the results of using it be similar to a ported ls6 oil pump or one of the other standard oil pump options? I dunno, maybe I'm crazy but I haven't seen any threads about this and my motor(ly6) has one on it already, no reason to change something if I don't have to. (let me clarify, if I don't get enough solid information to keep it, I will change it, but I would rather not because, lets be honest, I'd rather put that money towards go fast parts)

Unless you have a need for a HV pump you should just stick to a normal pump. A ported LS6 is nice, a Melling 10295 is good and cheaper then the HV 10296.
I'm running a Melling 10296 HV but that is because I have a built shortblock with bigger clearance on the mains and rods.
