Default Tapping noise @ 2k

LS2 motor -

when you rev the car between 1500-2000 rpm, you get a tapping noise coming out of the top of the motor (mild noise level). Lifting? what else? does it need immediate attention?

Was the motor warm? What lifters are on there? Im guessing lifter. A video would help diagnostics

It's hard to get a video of it, because it only does it when it's REALLY warm (like an hour of freeway driving), and I can't rev the motor to get a video without another person.

I'll try to get a video later this week or weekend, but to start, should I throw some thick oil in and go from there? (Recommend a certain viscosity? 20w50?)

The best thing you can do to figure out what it is pull the valve cover on the side that its ticking on.. its prety simple, if theres no broken spring or loose rocker or bent pushrod then it is your lifter, or cam related.

If you recently overrevved (which is easier with a m6 then auto, i figured that out the hard way) then id say its a bent pushrod. but my buddy has a 2006 gto that the lifter failed and wore his cam to **** and according to the shop took it to it "scarred the lifter jacket"

pull the valve cover. and nothing should be loose. any looseness created ticking

TBH it sounds like it's coming from the very front of the intake manifold, which makes no sense. Right behind the throttlebody..

The easiest way to figure out were it's coming from is to put a screwdriver in contact with the head/block or valve cover, try numerous places and put the handle end to your ear. in your case it happens only at 1500-2000? so put a shim in the throttle plate cam so it revs up to your ticking rpms ( thing that cable is attached to )

that will help you pinpoint were the noise is coming from, near the head gasket would most likley be a lifter, valve cover would be something between the pushrod and bottom of valve. a closer location to the noise would help us figure out were it is coming from, thus what to repair.

a longer piece of metal would help too if it is too loud with it revving at higher then idle. give that a try and let us know.

in the mean time pull the valve cover and take a look and see if anything is loose.
if you take out pushrods or lifters make sure you mark them so you can put them back in the place it came from.

id say 20w max. my laptop's speakers are the best but if i were to guess id say it sounds more like a knock then a tap. valvetrain noise makes a really distinctive tap/tick because the moving parts are moving VERY fast and they dont have much mass.
things to check:

check Compression
oil pressure/change oil
When you change the oil let the draining oil flow through a really fine sithe (<--mispelled)-like the thing you drain the water out of noodles with, to catch any small particles that are in the oil. so you know how much your engine is damaged.
start with that

pull the valve covers and observe your valvetrain

Also it's coming from the top of the motor (sounds like right in the intake mani), not the bottom.. so it's prob not a knock. right?
IDK....

tapping in the intake would say to me it is an intake valve tapping, which could defiantly be a broken intake valve spring which could not be pulling the valve up enough to seal all the way. try a compression test for sure. autozone rents a compression tool for free if you return it. a knock is possible....anything is possible, but theres no way to narrow it down to anthing if you dont pull the valve covers. its about a 15min job on each side and you will be able to narrow it down to either your blck or heads..

alright, going to pull the valve covers tonight will report back and take some photos.

was trying to replicate the noise earlier (motor was cold) for another video, but no dice... seems like it only does it when its quite warm.

PO took it to EZLube, so god knows what oil is in there right now.

Took it to two separate shops on lunch today, both of them said right away that I should change the oil and put 5w30 full synthetic in, first, before I do anything else~

What say you guys, are they right? or full of ****?
