Why not? Iron welds too. There is no reason it can't be done to an iron block.

Iron doesnt weld very easy. Ive seen alot of iron block welding for leaks and repairs. but never for adding bolt holes which would be have a pulling force on them.

Not say it cant be done ive just never seen it, I would guess the mount would pull off from heat cycles and force.

If some one know for sure about this id like to know to increase my knowledge base. but looking for people that have done it,

Iron welds just as well as aluminum...it just has to be heated up before welding to keep it from becoming brittle.

I guess you would have to start to do a cost analysis between the cost to convert an lq9 to a 6-bolt verses selling your block then buying an lsx block. I would think that the lq9 would have to be at least checked for distortion after welding it so many times.

Yes iron welds just fine but not cast iron. It's takes a little more skill to weld on that and to have that much clamping force put on it is more of an issue.

OP, I would just go find an LSX block instead. There was one in the classifieds for 1850.

You could always furnace braze some bosses onto the cast iron block, but I would find a shop that knows cast iron VERY well before Id even let them try it. Too much concentrated heat WILL crack the block. I used to work at a shop that dealt mainly with cast iron.

Or you could just convert to 1/2 inch head studs and oring the block. Or L19 head studs and oring it.
