Default LS2 w/ LS3 heads, Is this a smart move for $600???

Motor: LS2/402, Eagle crank/rods, Mahle pistons, Dart Pro Heads

Cam: Crower 622/609 238/246 112LSA (may change to suit LS3 needs)

Car: 2003 C5Z06

Tuner: Don Kinder has been tuning my builds since 2006

Why? Dart Pro's, I know nothing about them, but have been told(key word here) that they are just above 243's

Plan: remove the Dart's and install the LS3 heads(take-off), the LS3 intake/90mmTB cost is not an issue(the LS6 intake would cover it if sold)

1. LS3 heads($600)
2. LS3 intake/90 ($300-400)
3. Cam ($350)

Thanks for the info

If you go to the efforts to install the LS3 heads, you might consider having them ported before bolting them on. Lots of options here.

Can't address the Dart heads - don't read much about them in LS series.

If budget is not the main concern I would. I'd get 'em ported (by a pro) too since you have a few extra cubes. As mentioned, a cam too while you're at it...

the cam you have will compliment the LS3 heads nicely.

I agree with this POS^^^^
I Also believe that you should get them out to LPE, TEA or a porter that knows what he's doing with Ls3 heads.

You can save money by going to the Camaro5 forums. Those idiots over there are selling intakes for 150 with fuel rails and injectors lol.

LS3 head porting.............

typical LS3 porting starts at $1200..............I'd take the 1200 and sell the LS3's for 600, net 1800 and buy AFR or TFS., Basically 2400 vs 1800 if I went the LS3 ported route

I'm not spending $1200 to port GM castings.

don't know anything about the Darts.but the L92s straight from GM flow enough air(over 300cfm) to support about 600hp.unless your trying to build a max effort deal, you don't need to port the L92s,period.if it was me,i would just mill(or not)for desired compression, have the guides checked, get a good VJ and bolt them on.

still lookin for knowledge, I have zero on the LS3 heads except form what I've read here...

again, TFS and AFR no doubt are the way to go, but to invest 2400 into a C5? I'd sell the car and find a 20k C6

the CNC shops aren't going to make money giving the thumbs up on 'untouched' LS3 heads for a smart option

good valve job, and run them. I think they will be a better match for a 402 stroker than the Darts....will pickup upper end hp and you won't notice much difference down low

Stock LS3 heads with and LS3 intake is better than the LS6/Darts for a 402, so you will see a difference in hp, I'm pretty sure. But you could get your Darts heads fully ported and a FAST, but I dont know if youre gonna save money here..FAST is expensive. LS3 is a sure bet.

of course not.but a good shop will sell you a VJ if that's all you want, and there are gains in that. how much HP will you gain from porting?what are the airflow requirements of your engine?do a little research, you'll find there are people that have strong motors with unported L92s.

why not? they will flow as well or better than say a AFR 225.

If ported LS3's outflowed AFR225's...........then wouldn't the LS world abandon the aftermarket castings and just buy worked LS3 heads all day long?

I think my post is a bit confusing

Can I expect 500whp out of the 402LS2 with the LS3heads/intake and correct cam?

According to Pat G, Tony and a few others its not all about the flow. With the small bore of the ls2 theres a lot of valve shrouding with ls3 heads and ptv clearance is tight, so milling for loss of compression isnt an option unless you flycut

With your bigger cubes, and larger bore yes 500rwhp should be no problem.

uh yeah, hence why there are ton of guys running ported LS3's. I had AFR 225's before i got my ported LS3's.
