Default Oil Pump Failure

In my putting my car back together quest, I keep looking at oil pumps.

Someone local does a great job porting stock pumps and would save some cash on buying a new pump if its not needed.

Ive found alot of threads about pump failures, but instead of what caused it they get wrapped up (understandibly) in the rest of the carnage.

My question is, on a pump failure, what exactly is it that is failing? Something easily replaced with a new part?

Stuck pressure relief plunger in the bore seems to be a common failure mode.

Spend the coin. Moroso HV/HP all the time, every time.

Then you don't have to worry about it failing.
