Default GEN IV vs GEN III - IRON BLOCK ?

Forgive a dumb question . . .

What are the differences between the Gen IV cast iron block vs. the Gen III cast iron block ?

Mainly the location of knock sensors and the gen 4 blocks have a little better casting so if you intend on boring it out a gen 4 is a better bet.

If a 4th gen F-Body is the car it's going into, is there a preference, due to the sensor locations ?

I was think of an LS6 Valley Pan for the PCV setup .

Thoughts ?

There are Knock sensor harness adapters to run GEN IV in F-body.

For simplicity sake a gen 3 block would require nothing. The ten 4 you will need a harness (about $80)

The cam sensor is also different. On the Gen 3 blocks its in the back where as the gen 4 blocks its in the front.

Gen IV has oil feeds for AFM/DOD in the valley area. Knock sensors are on the sides of the block rather than in the valley. The cam sensor is in the timing cover instead of the rear top of the block.

Gotcha . . .

Given these variables, I am still undecided whether to get a GEN III or GEN IV block.

Thanks for the info !

I would stick with what your car is wired to accept.

Did your car have an LS1 to begin with or are you swapping from LT1?

Are you just replacing the shortblock or getting an entire engine?

Gen 3 is a direct fit. If you go gen 4 youre gonna have money in adapters. The choice is pretty obvious what you should do.

I'm going with the GEN III LQ9 block.

Building the entire motor . . . 408

LQ9 block, L92 CNC heads from SDPC, Comp Cams rocker arm trunnion kit, Wiseco / K1 4340 Crank (4" stroke) / 4340 H-Beam rods (6.125"), JE forged flat-tops (11:1), Napier 2nd rings, LSX 102 mm intake / Cable-operated throttle body, etc.

Thinking of getting Patrick Guerra to spec the cam . . . Is he as good as the "rumors" I have heard ?

Thanks !

Sounds good to me !

Rest of the combo will be a 4L80E ( 2.48 / 1.48 / 1.00 / .75 ) and a Strange S60 ( 3.54 or 3.73 gears )

Still undecided on how much converter I'll need . . . Thinking around 3000 rpm, give or take ( This is going to be a true "daily-driver", not a "weekend toy" )

I had performabuilt make me a 9" 3000 stall for my 228r ls6 car. I liked it, but id look into a 3200 next time around so you may wanna look into a yank ss3200.

I'll definitely check out Yank.

Does that model converter fit the 4L60E or the 4L80E ?

My car will have the 4L80E.

Thanks !

I've got a gen IV lq9 built by TSP but for some reason when swapping over the 3 sensors on the side of the block they were on opposite sides of what they were on my ls2 that I was taking them off of. I know this is a dumb question but the 3 sensors on the block, are they all knock sensors? There are two on the passenger side and one on the driver side. I dunno if my sensors were backwards b/c I have a gto or if it was possible that i was looking at the one block upside down and it didn't click. Too late for me to go out and double check but glad to know there extension harness if I need it b/c that is one part that had me worried.

Word of advice DO NOT put an edelbrock timing cover on your motor. It took 2 weeks of work to get it clearanced to fit. I dont think Aaron at TSP will ever sell one of those again.
