Default Comp trunion upgrade failure (Check yours)

This was on my oil pickup, as well as a small mass of metal shavings. What the motherfuck is it? Shown next to a 14mm lug nut for size comparison. Haven't pulled the heads to check the lifters yet (tomorrow) but the cam looked brand new. Oil pan is full of metal grit/****. 4000 miles on engine, not pleased. Engine made fantastic pressure and never gave me a single problem until it started tapping randomly. Once its stripped its off to the machine shop, im sure it had some of the **** block an oil passage and starve a bearing (tap tap tap tap)

It looks almost to me like a valve seal shred, but all seals are intact and brand new looking. This is a very low mile engine. Other thought was a retaining clip for a lifter, but it looks a little large to be one of those. Ideas?

It looks like the outside edge of a rocker arm bearing. Check them to see if one is coming apart.

It's not a part of the valvetrain. Bottom half of the motor. Looks like it may be part of a wrist pin lock

Looks like a rocker clip to me also, and those shavings could be the chewed up needle bearings that just had a nie ride through your motor

It's not from the top end of the engine

You said it's not in the valvetrain, but then you suggest it could be a valve seal or lifter... If it's from the valvetrain it can and will quickly make its way into the oil pan. Kinda does look like a piece of those SOB wrist pin spring clips, like this.

What is the OD? Metallic? Magnetic? Looks like it could be a piece of a thread or something too.

Looks like it could be a C-Clip retainer from a lifter. Tough to tell from the picture...but it might be a little too thick for one of them? Whose lifters are you running?

This is the best example I had on my computer without taking another pic...

Comparison?

Pull the valve covers off. Mine was making a horrible noise from the motor and misfiring. Sound came from back of the motor. Ended up being #8 Exhaust Rocker broken.

Update: Apparently I didn't do a well enough job inspecting the rockers. It WAS part of a trunion upgrade retaining clip. The other 3/4 of it was still in the head. I also found a second rocker with a partial break on it (pictured). No idea how or why, these aren't load bearing parts, so it's bullshit... hard to speculate, maybe a bad batch. This also doesn't explain the lower end noise the engine is making, perhaps just collateral damage. Going to replace all 32 clips out of an abundance of caution. All rod bearings looked pristine, as you'd expect on a 4000 mile engine. Pistons show moderate thrust surface wear, which is a product of the combo (stock sleeve big stroke). All wrist pins/spirolocks are intact and normal. The only unusual thing I've found so far is one of the top rings (steel ring) had an abnormal amount of tension... it was much springier then the rest, and the wear in that cyl was slightly different. No cyls show any wear you can feel with your hand, and all show hatch. Now that all the rods are out, I'm going to move onto the mains, and remove the cam. Still haven't found source of engine noise. So far so good though. Some pics.

So far its looking like a light hone, a set of rod bearings, cam bearings, and rings, along with 32 new retaining clips for the trunion upgrade (WTF comp).

Check your ******* trunions!

Mains look brand new. Figures. Guess it was a lifter making the noise. Better safe then sorry I guess. New rings+lifters+bearings, a hone and call it good.

I did. I've done 5 sets of them now. Check out this, someone posted on YB.

Summit's house version of the same thing. Notice the thickness of the retainer clip.

Trunion downgrade.... lol. I was leery of doing this so I didnt bother and im glad for it now. Pretty fast failure for the mere handful of "upgraded" rockers out there vs the millions of stockers that never seem to have much issue. Ive beat the living hell out of stockers with no issues on numerous engines now and a lot of miles.

I think my pass on trunion replacing, will stay a pass.

Not an option for me, I run lift beyond the physical limitations of the stock rocker arm

@S10, It took about 2 hours to get the engine out from fully street dressed, with a little bit of help from my wife passing hand tools under the car when I needed them. I've made the exhaust completely modular, headers drop in 5 minutes, bellhousing can be disconnected from the topside... it's very easy. Perks of having a huge-*** engine bay. About another two hours for engine setup and disassembly. Taking apart is a lot faster then putting together
