L33 details needed (OEM chain used, rods used, and max bore limit)
Like a fool, I put the engine in my Miata before figuring out what all it had. 3 years later, its time for a rebuild.
Anyway-
Are the pins floating?
Is the chain the same as the LS2?
What is the safe bore limit? Can I do a 3.903 or 3.905?
I have a hard time finding any straight information.
Thanks!

I have read you can bore these to slightly over stock LS1 bore. Some say 30 past, some say 70, but regardless you can bore the heck out of them if your so inclined but Id think it cheaper, wiser, and better to start with an LS2 block for big cube builds.
As for pistons? If your stepping from stock then Diamond make a nice slug, Wiseco etc. Callies rods and either of those would make a hella boost engine. The block can take some jam....

I'm actually now just looking for a 3.898 piston (to keep the meat on the sleeves and offer another rebuild down the road if need be) with the stock rods. I've put together several engines with the Mahle pistons and good rods but since the Miata will never have a bunch of juice or PSI down the intake, I figure stock rods should be plenty.

I have mine all apart right now.
Pins are floating. Rods are the Gen IV. They look good to me!
Chain and gear are the same as LS2.
Block is drilled for the damper as well, but there wasn't one in mine.
I would sonic check the bores befor boring to LS1 size. I know it's been done, but wouldn't you rather know?
Wiseco makes nice drop in pistons that use the stock rod. Called the JY series. Std, .010 and .020.

If you keep the OEM rods, be sure to upgrade the bolts. For a little more, you can upgrade the rods. Sounds like a no brainer. IMO
