Custom grind cam without knowing how heads flow?
Newby with a question: Is it possible to make an educated decision about a custom grind cam without knowing exactly what the heads on a motor flow?
According to the mod list that was in the glove box of my car when I bought it, the original owner had the LS7 heads ported by Greg Good. The kicker is that the only details to go along with that were "fully ported/polished LS7 heads- titanium intake and exhaust valves with hardened tips (no lash caps)".
With all that said, the cam in the car is a bit bigger than what I want in just a weekend street toy (248/251 .615/.647 112 LSA, I believe). Is there a way to give a company enough details about my setup for them accurately recommend a custom grind for what I want?

You can get close, but "fully ported and polished" can mean many different things. Are they hand ported? Cnc ported? If so, by who?
Your best bet, without wasting money on a full custom cam would be to call Tsp or whoever and try to pick their brains on what a decent shelf cam would be. Then try to find it used.
It would be hard for anybody to spec a totally custom cam without having a ballpark idea on what the heads are capable of.

They were done by Greg Good in Houston, TX. Based on some other info I've been able to dig up, I'm pretty sure they were done right around 2006. Everything I've been able to read on his work around that time on the LS7s points to the heads being hand ported. I can't be certain of that, though.

Try to see if the heads have some sort of serial number on them, some places keep track of these for any future issues. For all you know it's just some receipt and maybe your are just plain Ls7 heads with no work done to them.
Your best bet is to take them off, get them flowed and then base your decision on a cam with concrete information instead of assumptions ( the mother of all fuckups). Do it once and do it right or you'll be paying twice bud. Ask many of us how we know? lol

Let's compare:
234/246 114+4 ...... 248/251 112+3
ivc............7....................15
ivo............47...................53
evo...........61...................60.5
evc ......... 5....................10.5
ecl ......... 118..................115
overlap..... 12...................25
How much power between these two cams? 10hp? I sure know which one will drive better!

litle88, thanks for the advice. Definitely not looking to pay multiple times.
KCS, that's exactly what I'm hoping. I've heard a ton of good stuff about Greg's work.
STAR, greatly appreciate the advice and numbers!
