Default Any High Mileage 408's out there??

Looking to replace my aging LS1 with a 408 for my daily driver. Curious if it is possible to get 100K plus miles out of a set of 2618 forged pistons and 4 inch stroke. (iron block)

Goal is to assemble a mild cammed 408 with ported LS3 heads that I can get a couple years out of before having to swap springs. Not a race car by any means, just looking for a DD that has more ***** than most and is easy to drive. Last goal is to keep mpg over 20 on highway with 6 speed car.

Am I nuts or can this be done?? I drive about 30K miles a year, near all on the highway.

Ive read somewere they last around 40k miles with a factory block, BUT that is totally hear-say info that I find hard to believe. Id say a sleeved block would last longer because the pistons dont come out of the hole at the bottom of the stroke.

I would be surprised at even 40.

Look at all the trouble the ls7 went through to get. 100k mile engine. And even those don't always last.

I've seen as high as 204K
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...04k-miles.html

but 100K is fairly common, but allot has to do with mods and tuning. Allot of track cars with mods seem to pop prematurely.

I don't see why it wouldn't last more than 40k with proper maintenance and good tune.

Although if you're driving that much, I would stick with a stock stroke and maybe get some 4032 forged pistons.

40K is unacceptable for me - can't be rebuilding every 18 months. Guess I'll have to check with sleeve guys like ERL or RED to see if their products can get longer life. Good news is if I go this direction more displacement is an option as well as LS7 style heads. Bad news is this kind of build will be significantly more expensive. Maybe not over the long run.

It is possible. Talk to pat g, I think the eps came are easy on the springs which will make them last longer. I think what you are looking for is a low 220 cam with about .600 lift on a 114 or so. You say it's not a drag car, so that should be good for highway runs (outside this country ) the lift and low duration combined should net you OVER 20mpg on the highway. Bottom line, if your not planning on ragging the crap out of it every chance you get, the motor will last. Hell, they didn't put that motor in the Chevy 2500's this last decade to only last 40,000 miles. I've seen them go over 200k. Good example, I have a 224 cam on my vette. I punch it every now and then and see the track too, and I have put about 50k miles on them. And that's with the harsh x-er lobes. My lift is .650 on the springs and .580+ on the cam. That may be another reason it's lasted. So I don't see why it wouldn't last long with a set of good lobes on a cam. Like I said talk to pat g and see what he thinks about your setup. I think it's very doable.

408 has a 4 inch stroke. The 2500s only has a 3.622 so that isnt apples to apples. I hope they last longer than 40 k cause that is the way im going also.
