LS2 vs LQ9? or shall I get broke and buy a LS3?
Hi,
My 1970 Camaro has a nice LS1 with a M22 4 speed right now, everything works OK so far, but I came to a point where I want some more power and gears, so I'm in the market for a nice LS2+T56 combo, I see the current prices varies from 6 to 6.5K for the combo. Do you think its a good upgrade or am I buying old, obsolete technology here?, for a bout 3K more I can get a LS3+T56 out from gen5 camaro, do you think its worth the extra cost?
Last thing : whats the power potential of the LS2? is it easy to reach a 400-450 RWHP out of this engine? the car wont have any smog (no cats, no EGR .. etc) and I'll be using a dynatech full length headers and a 2.5 in. mandrel bent tubes.

I know that may give me a better HP/TQ than the LS2, but it also involves doing some costly mods, if I can reach 400-450 RWHP with the LS2 with something as simple as a camshaft and tune + free flowing exhaust, that would be my optimum solution.

Im not sure what your goals are, so I may be off base. I would stay away from the iron block simply because half the cool factor in having an old car ( I have a 72 Camaro w an LS3) w an LS is the aluminum block. The handling is much better with the 80-100 lbs weight savings on the frontend too. The best example I can give for the LS2 are the GTOs running around everywhere making 400+ with a cam swap and exhaust. I don't think you will have any problem making the number with an LS2. I had an 05 GTO w just cat delete, cheap pacesetter headers and SAP exhaust make 376 rwhp through a manual. I do like the LS3 though and that's why I went that way with my early second gen. No wrong choice with either one. Good luck!

Weight savings as mentioned is best reason - unless you're one of those string-tie the wheel & brick the pedal kind of guys
LS2 block is a favorite of re-sleevers - if you're uber rich.
