When installing a timing chain the cam gear dot is at 6 oclock and crank gear is at 12 oclock,is that correct?
im doing a 24x conversion if that helps.im little confused on the direction my book gives, it says some engines have timing gear at 12 oclock & crank gear at 6 oclock? also How do you find top dead center on #1?

Cam gear should be at 6, crank gear at 12. This is known as "dot to dot", respectively.

There are several ways to find TDC. You can use a piston stop in the spark plug hole if you have the heads installed already, if not a deck bridge indicator will work as well. For detailed instructions, look up Comp Cams' website. They have a pretty good how to.
