Default new LS7 heads coated in anti-corrosion

I just picked up my new LS7 head assemblies from GM. They came coated with some greasy crap that I swear is cosmoline like what old military surplus guns used to be coated with. Is this stuff cosmoline? Any tips on cleaning the heads I'd like to get it out of the pores in the cast aluminum so it does not leak out when it gets hot and make my engine look and smell like ****?

I'm a bit pissed off, wtf is the need to coat aluminum parts with the heavy grease used in WW2 to protect steel?

Most machine shops will have a jet clean that will pretty much pressure wash your parts with hot water and detergent. That usually gets caked on oil and grease off, so I would expect it to work on that stuff. A set of heads will usually run about $30.

There is a sticker in the box saying that the contents have been prepped for long term storage.

Makes me wonder if the production of the complete heads is done now, and what's on the shelves at GM is it?

Could be that since there is no "production" LS7 for the 2014 Corvette, the demand for the LS7 heads and any other parts is probably pretty low compared to previous years (2006-2013). I would be happy they took the initiative to preserve them. My two cents . . . . .

If the stories of bad guides are to believed they would be needing them by the rail-car load.

In all seriousness I agree that its good they make effort to preserve them against corrosion , but so far I've returned 2 sets due to shipping damage and other pecker tracks on them due to rough handling. If what they have on hand is it, GM had better make sure they pack them better to protect against the fed-ex monkeys.

There is a production ls7 for the z28. I would assume they will make just as many ls7 z's as they did ls7 vettes.

Not even close. Z they may make a few hundred, no where near the 20k+ ls7 vettes.

There will be plenty of them produced. Don't sweat it. Between production engines, warranty issues, crate motors and heads for GMPP. There will be no shortage. Just put them in your parts washer and scrub them with a parts cleaning brush and the protective film will come right off. Nothing to it.
