The advance is ground in the cam like you said, so when you install the lower gear don't use the advance or retard keyways, use the "0" keyway.

Haha, I probably don't have time for that!
Yes, install the gears dot to dot and then you can degree it from there if you have the tools.

Okay so if I set it dot to dot. Then I can still advance or retard the timing to set it correctly?

After you degree the cam, if you need to advance or retard it, then you'll have to remove the lower gear and move it to the desired advance or retard keyway.

That's why I prefer the hex-a-just because it doesn't require removing the lower gear, just loosening the cam gear bolts and turning the hex.

Yes. The hex-a-just is much better. Worth the money. Luckily, when I degreed my cam, it was only off .5 degrees, so I left it alone. That's really all you're doing when you degree. Verifying that the crank, cam, and timing set are within spec when used together.

Checking P to V is difficult without the right tools. Many use clay but using a test spring and a dial indicator is a much better process.

I do have 2 checker springs on the number 1 cylinder. So how would I go about doing this route? Also its easier this way to degree the cam in to right?
