Default ls1 tuning

I would like to learn how to tune LS motors (specifically the Ls1) to give it more power. I have a 2002 Trans Am the car is completely stock and a rare one too, so I don't know yet if I want to do this to my car but I'd sure love to learn how to tune the Ls motors anyways.
I've read that you can tune the system in the car to give you more power even being in the stock form. I was wondering if this could be done without totally ruining all the original factory settings, I heard you can save the original settings somehow and than reinstall it into the car if you please.
When it comes to tuning what equipment do i need to do this, how hard would it be to do this, and what would the costs be to do this. any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks guys.
