Default Cam for my ls1?

Hey guys, I've been thinkin about getting a cam for my stock 2000 ls1. I don't really know to much about cams to be honest. What size cam would be a good choice? I know I don't want anything overly aggressive either. Also this isn't a bad idea either right? My cars got 116k on it. Thanks for the help!

Asking, 'What cam should I use?" is like saying, "I need to fix my car, what tool should I use?".

The cam has a huge impact on the engines performance, but it has to work in conjunction with the other parts to attain the goal you want.

You need to specify your ultimate goal, other mods, etc.

116K miles can be a lot of miles, or not many. Start by evaluating the overall condition of your engine. Start with a compression test, leak down test, and coolant system test. No sense adding race parts to a worn out engine.

Auto or Stick? If Auto does it have a stock stall? Generally speaking, if you are looking for something mild with a great overall range of power, take a look at our 224R

ls1's are gen III not gen IV (fyi not bashing you). i wish there was a good checklist asking things like daily driver? drag strip only? how high are you comfortable revving your rpm's? etc... i made the mistake of under camming my car with the ls6 2002 vette cam. TSP's 224 is a very good choice. with almost any bigger cam you will need better valve springs. my 99 stock springs would start to bounce / float at only 5800 rpms! goodluck. ps if changing cams an ls2 timing chain is cheap insurance / upgrade. (about $50).

I put a 233 TSP in my 99 ls1 w/ 120k on it a few months back and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! WOW! - But you have to make the necessary upgrades in other spots to help ensure you don't blow up your engine. LS2 timing chain, LS6 ported oil pump, LS7 lifters, springs

224 / 228R would be a nice, mild cam to check out, though - just remember to get the accessories with it.
