Default DOD/AFM Oil Consumption - Why?

I've got a '13 LC9 with about 17K. Since new it's used a quart of oil every 5K. That's clearly well under GM's acceptable limit, but it's the only new engine I've ever owned that used any oil.

Based upon the litany of horror stories, it seems safe to assume that the reason this engine uses oil, and my LS7 and LSA (and previous LS1 and LS6) do/did not, is AFM.

My question is, why? I've read some TSBs that indicate misting at the PRV (and a cover to shield it), and a PCV issue on the left valve cover (and a new PN to shield it), but mine being a 2013 should have all that. So, what is it about AFM (or maybe GM's implementation - I don't hear about modern hemis having the same problem) that burns oil?

Are the rings different? Is the oil going out all the cylinders, or only the hot ones? Only the cold ones?
