First off, I hope you never swap cams in an LS engine and rely on the trays to keep the lifters up. Most people that have actually tried it that way would recommend against it.
There are other ways. There are dowels you can buy to slide in the oil passages above the cam tunnel which will hold up the lifters. Others have used 8mm plug wire. I bought 16 pen magnets from Autozone and used a zip tie or rubber band to tie them together.
This isn't some hidden ninja secret either. Just about any "How To" write up for swapping cams will explain the same tricks. I'd suggest you do some research as there are other helpful tips and tricks you might learn as well.

The dowels work, but unless you are swapping cams pretty frequently, you won't really use them too often. I bought those pen magnets, it worked perfectly, and I always use those pen magnets when I drop a bolt or washer. It sucks to drop a bolt down in the engine bay and it doesn't hit the ground lol.

I hate dropping **** down in the engine bay. Get the pen magnets.
Btw, I once dropped a bolt INTO the framerail above the radiator. I was like WTF. It's boxed and enclosed on both ends. But it has openings just big enough to get a punch and a magnet into it to coax **** out.
Luckily, rage, magnets, and rage got it out.
