Oil Pump Question: 408ci LS2 Marine Motor
Ok, I have been utilizing the search button a lot on this build and have gotten a lot of great info from that, but with this being a fairly unique motor application, I wanted to give it its own thread.
Here are the specs that I have so far on my build:
Stock LS2 aluminum block
Callies Compstar crank
Callies Compstar H-beam Rods
Wiseco -8cc Dish Pistons
317 Heads with PRC stage 2.5 CNC Port, opened to 70cc chambers
Should be right at 10.5:1 compression
Custom cam from Marine Kinetics

620.5/612
112 LS
This is going to be a carb motor.
Now, here is my question about Oil Pump selection. I have read quite a few threads on here debating a high volume pump vs. a high pressure pump. But 99.9% of these applications are in drag or street cars. With this being in a 25ft boat, it's going to be seeing a whole new level of beating. There are times when I could be holding this motor at 6500 rpm for a few miles. And even just cruising, it will be setting at 3500-4000 rpm for very long distances, possibly an hour or longer. I have read on some of the oiling issues on these motors, most notably them being able to pump a pan dry over long runs. So here is what I have come up with on other components of the oiling system.
Kevco custom 12 quart capacity oil pan
Remote oil filter with dual Filters
Tube style oil cooler inline with these filters
All in all I figure this system has at least a 14 quart capacity. The only piece of the puzzle I haven't figured out is what pump to use. Right now I'm leaning towards the Melling 10296 high volume pump, but am wanting some opinions if I will be needing more volume or more pressure with how this motor will be utilized. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

That oil pump should be good but with the low pressure spring. The motors do not have alot of issues with those rpms. The cam seems a littl big if its a prop boat along with the heads at 317. If its a jet then prob be ok. with that cam your tq pk is going to be in the 5500 range i am thinking so you will be missing out on fuel economy at your cruise of 4000. In marine applications LS engines make a lot of oil heat so get a real big cooler. I have a tube one in my 4269 ci ls3 and run at 200-210 at 4200 rpm cruise with 12" vacum.

The LS2 over oils the top of the motor at sustained high rpms so use some restricted flow push rods and drill the lifter trays. The 1096 is the same pump I use, but I haven't found any straightaways that will let me stay at 6,500 for an hour.
