Default Which first? Wipe pattern or pushrod length?

Brand new motor, just got it together. I know how to do both but realize that changing the wipe pattern VIA machining/spacing the rockers (yella terra) that it will have an adverse affect on the push rod length.

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like ou already know the answer.

If you have an adjustable rocker, it may not really matter but with a non adjustable rocker you're going to want to get your geometry/rocker height first, then measure the pushrod length.

If the wipe pattern is important to you check that first sense if you need to shim that will alter the push rod length.

Ideally the wipe pattern be at center but a little off is normal and I personally leave it along never had any problem that's what the stem lubrication is for and take care off.

You use and adjustable push rod until you get the right wipe pattern. Once that is achieved, measure the adjustable pushrod and get the length to order the new pushrods.

Yeah I get that, but I have zero push rods right now. Just the checker. So how do I get the rocker geometry right first?

Yup, I know all of that.

and then guess at the pre-load? Doing this will also collapse the lifter and cause measurement differences.

So I guess I should clarify, I have no push rods available currently. The idea was to wait until I knew what length I need. At this point I'm just hoping I get lucky with the wipe pattern. Measuring push rods is easy, and can be done quickly. So I'm going to order what I have measured then pray the wipe pattern is good.

Push rods on 6 pistons and .050" preload are 7.35" Will let you know how the wipe pattern turns out.

You can always use the pushrod checker as a way to check different lengths.

I.E.

Turn the checker out to 7.350 and use it to check the wipe pattern.

You need a pair of lightweight checking springs.
The imaginary line that connects the center of the rocker arm trunion to the center of the roller tip of the rocker needs to be perpendicular to the valve centerline when the valve is 50% open (roughly .300 retainer movement).
The checking springs should not collapse the lifter plunger and then you can just add your desired preload to the measured checking pushrod.

Default Improvised Checker Spring

I found that an extra mag tube spring from any (tube fed) 12ga shotgun can be chopped to length and makes a perfect checker spring...
