Default L76 rod knock or lifter noise?

So my wife just fired up her 09 G8 GT and it was making what sounded like a rod knocking and filled the garage with black smoke out the exhaust. I ran out to the garage and told her to shut it off. I then checked all the fluids and it's full. Oil has no coolant in it that I've seen on the dipstick. Going to go drain the oil to make sure though. I just fired it up just now so I could hear the noise myself and the knocking is gone but the valvetrain sounds loud way louder than the normal lifter tick. I have no experience with the L76 yet, so was hoping someone has some suggestions on possibilities to check out besides drain the oil and check it and doing a compression check.

pull off the valve covers and see if you have any unusually loose rockers.

The stock DOD lifters are prone to going bad.

Yeah, after doing some research and listening to it, I just ordered a AFM/DOD delete kit and a cam.

The factory Eaton lifters are crap. Even the later redesigned Delphi lifters leave something to be desired. DOD delete kit is about the best option.

Do yourself a favor and at least put in the Morel 5315 lifters.

I used LS7s in mine and I am about to swap them out because of on and off again low RPM ticking.
