Default Quench on LQ4/L92, is .030 too little ?

Hi all,

Building an LQ4 with L92 heads. I just measured my piston/deck clearance and find most pistons are .005-.009 above the deck. I have purchased FelPro 1027 gaskets as per this hotrod build :

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...ylinder-heads/

The compressed gasket thickness is .039in which means I will have a minimum of .030 quench height between piston and head. This number seems a bit tight for my liking but I couldn't see professional engine builders in hot rod selecting a gasket with too tight a quench height. What do you guys think ? Is .030 quench too tight ? I will also be getting the heads milled (which will effect PTV clearance some). It is of course possible that my measurements are off a few thousands on the HIGH side, none of the measurements are larger then .009. The .009 measurement could be minus .001, plus 0.

Cheers

I wouldn't run that tight. I'd would have just used a GM MLS gasket.

I would not run a quench that tight. The tightest I have ever run is .036".

.030" is a bit tight for a street car....but not TOO tight. Race cars run tighter than that but they are built to very exacting tolerances.

If you're gonna run .030" the you'd betty be using 'top-shelf' parts and it needs to be built by someone who REALLY knows what they're doing!

Out of curiosity.....why the need to mill the heads.....what CR are you trying to achieve?
