Default Is there an easy way to tell if I have 4 gen LSx?

As the title says, I picked up a 6.0L with issues, I can't tell if it's a gen III or gen IV.

Thanks.

gen III's have the knock sensors located in the lifter valley, Gen IV have the knock sensors on the side of the block.

It may still have the thicker rods and floating pistons. Usually if the lifter valley and manifold bolts have 13mm heads you have the gen4 rods and pistons. 10mm bolts its all gen3

Didn't know that. Is there a stamp on the rods or any other identifier as far as gen IV internals? I have a 6.0 genIII short block with heads but nothing else so I don't have the bolts. I'm doing a stroker build so I don't need the stock internals but asking more out of curiosity.

Look up gen 3 vs gen 4 rods on google. The rod sized is significantly different.

Gen 4 pistons will have retainers holding the pins in place.
Gen 3 pins are press fit in the rods, no retainers needed.

They also have a extruding dimple on 1 side of the rod. Between the dimple, how big they are and the piston pins youll know

My 04 LQ4 has gen4 rods. If you have 13mm headed exhaust manifold and lifter valley cover bolts you have the better rods more than likely. If theyre 10mm its gen3.

They have the 13mm heads for sure. Is there a difference in the piston tops? Is there a way to run my bore scope down a plug hole to tell for sure?

Is it like a tear drop on the inside, about half way down the rod?

Thanks.

Looking for a dimple?

The rods are very obviously different. You shouldn't even make it to the dimple before you know.

It also has the 13mm valley cover bolts, it didn't have the manifolds on it when I picked it up.

Thanks again.

How about the piston tops? Are they the same? Not going far enough to drop the pan at this time.

You won't be able to tell looking at the tops of the pistons.
