Just rolled over my new 402, no oil pressure, and bent dipstick?!?!?
I just got to the point today where I figured i could hit the starter and at least prime the oil system. I cranked it a few times for ~4-5 seconds, but never saw the oil pressure gauge leave 0 psi. Not even a bump. I checked the oil pressure sender, and it's not broken off, and is plugged in. I know I installed the oil pickup tube right, o-ring and all.
Now, I know I put 5 quarts of oil into it to flush the system. And since there's no big puddle on the floor, I'm sure it's still in there. But just to be thorough, I pulled the dipstick to check the level. Another problem, I had to two-hand the dipstick out, and when it came out, it looked like a great big capital J. Apparently, it had a disagreement with the crankshaft.
Needless to say, it's been a wierd day.
Anyway, can I pull the oil filter and crank the motor (with a catch tray under there, obviously) and see if I have oil pressure? I don't have the fuel injectors plugged in yet, so I can't hurt it by running without oil.
Any other ideas, about the oil pressure, or the dipstick? Is there some thread out there about this, that I forgot to read??

Yes it will. It should build 20-30 lbs with the starter.

First question that is crucial before you do start it.
Is the front oil galley freeze plug installed? (Its under the timing cover so if its not reinstalled by machine shop, it will pump oil right back out the front of the motor and you wont know why you dont have oil pressure when you start it.)
If not, youll wipe out the bearings within 15-20 seconds after firing it up. Its happened to a few guys I know.
Other than that, I almost never get any oil pressure just cranking it over with the starter, usually ill crank it for 10-15 seconds, then start it up and get oil pressure about instantly.

Id suggest pulling the spark plugs so you dont beat up the starter and itll spin faster. My buddies motor took damn near a minute and a half to prine with a drill one small block ford. Unfortunatly you cant do that on an LS1. If your sure every plug is in place, id pull the spark plugs and give it a good 10 second spin with teh starter. You should see a little pressure that way.

Allright, I PM'd Brian at SDPC, where the block came from to see if they install the oil gallery freeze plug. I think it was there, but it's been over a month since I put the timing cover on so I don't remember with any certainty. Now I gotta figure out why it tried eating my oil dipstick...
