Default Flywheel cover T56 for LS2

I am installing a T56 with an LS2 into a '67 SS/RS Camaro - oddly enough, the GM website as well as local dealerships are telling me that a flywheel cover is not necessary; however, the flywheel is clearly exposed (to potential rocks, dust, etc.). I have tried to locate the flywheel cover, yet GM has it as "discontinued" (on a part that is only 4 years old?).

Has anyone encountered anything like this?

I assume you are refering to the bell housing. Get a McLeod SFI scatter shield. The OEM bell housing is very thin aluminum alloy and gives no protection.
