Default L92 vs Ls7

Ok guys, I am shipping my block and pistons out next week to get my shortblock built. Finally getting started on my own private monster . My question is this: I only want to spend about 3K on heads. Would I be better off going with a set of basically stock LS7 heads, maybe some exhaust porting and milling, or go with a set of fully ported L92's? With a chamber size in the mid 60's and a .040 gasket I should end up with a 11.5~ 12-1 scr. My goals for the motor are 600 rwhp. And no I am not just looking for a Dyno queen, however that is what I need to run the times I want at the track. I am looking to get into the 9's on a 150 wet shot. The reason I say wet is 99% of the time I will be running with no bottle and I don't want to be running around pig *** rich on a nitrous tune. If I have any flawed logic or I am making unreasonable goals please let me know. I am still a relative newbie but I do a LOT. I look forward to a pretty lively conversation on this

If you don't have the bore diameter to allow the use of LS7 heads then your choice is easy. L92's

Sweet. You got some decisions to make then

Im far from an expert but your valve srouding would be about as bad as it can get if you went LS7

That is true, but how much would that hurt me?

I personally don't know. Just see the talk thrown around. Hopefully someone with experience on this will chim in for ya.

But on the other side you would be unshrouding the L92's nicely.

Are your L-92's ported? If they are, who did them? W2W?

Nope they are stock in respects to porting. I have a second set that I will probably have ported sometime once I start seeing #'s off these things and people start figureing out what really works. I have all winter.

I would go with the ls7s cause of the reduced valve angle, better clearance, and the intake manifold will not be an issue.

I would stick with the L92's for that budget.... To make LS7 heads up to spec with a good valve job and durable valves is going to take up most of that budget of yours and that's without the castings.

Bret, is there something wrong with the factory valves? I was planning on going with factory intake port on the LS7's and just do some exhaust work so that I wouldn't need to go with such a huge split on my cam. Is my logic flawed here? What about the ET ls7's? I know that they are a little more, $3200 i believe, as long as I don't have to use the Jesel system, I believe I could swing them. I am open to almost any suggestions. Also really interested on seeing what the Warhawks do. Does any one else see valve shrouding as a problem with the LS7 heads?

Yes, anytime you see a failure with the LS7 head it's because of the stock lash caps on the valves. The VJ is basically junk from GM, you run a head for 5 mins and the seats will show signs of heat from leakage. I don't know if GM/Del West has fixed the Ti valve problem but right now i wouldn't roll the dice with them.
