Default Solid Roller with L92 heads???

Trying to find what these heads like. I have talked to various people that know there stuff and all have a totally different opinion. I thought about going with a solid roller setup and putting a smaller cam in my car for driveability/tuning issues that are unresolved. Let me know what you think.

1st cam was something that was used in the old stly LS1 head 427. So there was no research done at the time on L92's. The 2nd comp cams spec'd out. You don't sound so impressed with either. What do you recommend?

Your "smaller" cam is still pretty large. I remember people being concerned about cutting the spring pockets for larger diameter springs. I haven't seen anyone do it so far.

He has more cubes than you do....

That solid roller will act like an even smaller hyd setup.

I'm not a cam guy, but I am interested in who has been doing what with cams for the L92 heads. No opinion one way or the other on these. Just curious.

The L92's are a great street head but a poor race head due to things like the short valve lengths, short valve tips and small diameter spring pockets. Aftermarket rockers are a must when going with a solid roller and I don't see running cams in the mid 240's duration as requiring a solid roller setup. So far the virtue with the L92 heads is that guys can make a comfortable amount of power in a daily street driver at an affordable price. The L76 intake limits upper rpm power potential. Most engines are signing off around 6200-6400 rpms with the L76 intake. I've seen flywheel dyno data of a 402ci engine with a low 240ish duration cam make peak power at 7200rpms. That engine dynoed just over 640fwhp and 570ft/lbs of torque.
IMO the hassle of setting up a pair of L92 heads for a solid roller cam are not worth the results. If you require a solid roller cam I suggest going with an aftermarket head. That will allow for proper spring and rocker setups and more importantly, an LS7 intake manifold.

Best of luck,

Richard
