Default My LSX 454 Buildup (Pics in side) & Tips I learned along they way!

I bought the engine through Jeremy at MPH Motorsports, But SDPC built it.
Here is what I bought for the short block!

Callies Comp Star 4340 4.125” stroke crankshaft
Wiseco 4.187” custom forged nitrous pistons w/ lateral gas ports & tool steel pins
Callies Comp Star 6.125” H beam connecting rods w/ ARP 2000 7/16” bolts
Childs & Albert stainless chrome ring
Clevite MS 2199 H main bearings
Clevite CB 663 H rod bearings
Dura Bond one piece cam bearings.
complete shortblock with ported oil pump, N motion timing chain, custom grind camshaft, all gaskets from the heads down including cosmetic head gaskets,
11.44-1 Comp ratio
MSD Plug Wires
American Racing 1 7/8" full length stainless racing headers. (Not Kooks)
Spec twin disk clutch
ATI damper
Patriot Heads #2019 2.08/160/72cc
ls6 intake
Ported stock throttlebody
Z06 85mm MAF
Hartland sharp rockes
Hardened push rods
Comp lifters
MSD Plug wires
Nastyperformance fuel system with 60# injectors

Comp Cams
Gross Valve Lift .613 in .596 ex
Durration @ .006 305 in 315 ex
Durration @ .050 252 262
Intake centerline 112
Lobe lift .3610 .3510
Lobe seperation 114+2

So far in putting this combo together into my 1999 Trans am I have learned;
1 The windage tray needs to be spaced away from the crank with 3 washers per stud.
2 The oil tube pickup needs to be checked and adjusted because of the washer spacers
3 You will need to make a small dent in the windage tray so the oil pan fits, Where the pan covers up the low oil sensor it hits the windage tray!
4 The 99 Ls1 Has a diffeant head bolts than the Lsx (and the 2004 up Ls engines) (see picture with way to long ARP Bolts) I needed shorter bolts.
5 More to come as I finish building it and installing it!!!
6 Tourqe Specs (3rd one down)

Those are some good hints for people doing this themselves. I'll be interested to hear how you like that clutch. I've heard some mixed reviews of them. Which material is it?

I will be the first to admit the top end on this engine sucks!!
I had the heads, intake, and tb on my last build so to save some money right now I am reuseing them,

The shortblock, cam , Pistons Where all picked with the idea that when I can afford to I can go with, Ls7 ported heads, Ls7 intake, Big throttle body ect..

The spec Part# is SC09SST Im not sure what material it is? (it holds up to 900 ft lbs of tourqe)

I'm at a stand still with the assembly of the engine, Weds night I reolized the head bolts would not work So thursday I ordered the ARP LSX head bolt kit and instructed them to overnight ship them. Friday No Bolts I called and they said they shiped them saturday special They never showed up So now it will probably be the weekend after next when I get it in and running.

On the clutch material I belive it the cheapest twin disk avalable, What ever that material is?? I found the part # on www.spec.com and ordered it through MPH Motorsports.

Dosen't the throw out bearing have to compress in when installing the tranny?? I guess I can check to see if the clutch is disingaged now.
How do you fix this?? Did you space your slave from the tranny?

If you look at your slave the TOB is spring loaded out and has to be compressed in to work. I think this is how it has to work?? Can any one back me up on that?? Thanks

Andrew..... looking good.
Sorry about the bolts. I will check to see why they didn't arrive first thing tomorrow morning.
Of course I will call you once I get it straightened out.

To add a few more things. Andrew and I put together a setup that will hopefully work nicely for now and even better for a future top end. We used a piston that works for a 15 degree head or a 12 degree head that way we can do a LS7 top end in the future. We also specked a cam that will hopefully work ok now but really come alive with the LS7 style heads and the 1.8 rocker's. A lot of little things to think of when trying to put it together for now but have room to grow for later.
Also the headers are actually American Racing 1 7/8" race headers.
I am looking forward to seeing the results.

Good luck with it!!! Be careful with your cam sensor harness I had to switch a couple of wires on it.

I re-used my top end too although now I'm running a ported fast and NW (well almost waiting for it to get here.) Funny my top end was done a couple of year ago for my 388 all bore with the intention of going big cubes later. Now it is the weak link funny how that works

^ That sucks.

What decision made you decide to go with gas ports? I've talked to couple piston manufacturers and they all talked me out of it. I've noticed recently that most of the LSX builds I see are using those very same pistons with gas ports.

What I got from piston manufacturers and local shop owners.

Pros:
-Reduced ring flutter
-Better oil control
-More power

Cons:
-Drastically reduced ring life
-Gas ports will plug over time especially in a street motor
