Default pick me a new cam for my L92 370

ok guys i am wanting to go with a new cam that will peak around 6800. i want to shift at 7000 and i want it to have less overlap than my cam now has 22* @ .050"

my cam now- i was wanting the nasty lope and beastly midrange power which is does very well. the bucking sucks in traffic which i do a lot of but i knew what my cam was going to be like when i had it ground and i can live with it if i have to. my cam now just seems to run out of steam up above 6k. havent had it dynoed or anything and have a 12.6-12.8 afr all the way through on the WB. im running 30* of timming and have a SCR of 11.1-11.2. milled .025" and a .040 gasket.

i am thinking of a cam on a 114ish lsa in the 240-246 range but i dont know anything about valve events so i am open to some schooling and opinions.

summary- i want a more driveable car (less bucking) and more topend power. my solution for this is a larger Dur cam on a tighter LSA so it has less overlap. no sure if this is the thing to do or not. from reading other posts a 12* split cam is a bit much for a N/A motor. i see most people running 6-8* with l92 heads.

also thinking about going with a carb intake and elbow.

Thanks in advance guys.

Nick

Increase the intake lobe duration to 242º and swith to a carb intake or sheet metal manifold. The rpm limiter seems to be the L76 intake. I have some customers running carb intakes peaking power at 7200 with hyd roller cams in the mid 240ºish range.

Good luck,

Richard

so a 242/248 on a 114 lsa possibly and how much advance or retard should i do?

how much is there to gain with the carb and elbow up top? i know i will lose a bit of low end especially with the cam. ive read mixed reviews on the carb and elbow set up. i trust your opinion, you sorta kinda know a few things about these heads and intake setups, lol . thanks for all the help

Try the intake swap first it may take care of some of the bucking down low and may extended your useable rpm range up top better. With that size cam you should be able to get good power up to 6600 or so.

well i also thought about trying that first to help with the up stairs problems. how would the intake help with bucking? FWIW i am not complaining about bucking, i knew what i was getting into with i had the cam ground. but if i go with another cam it will have less overlap hopefully and still have decent valve events. how much better does the carb and elbow flow vs the L76?

The much larger plenum of the vic jr and elbow slows down air speed at lower rpms thats why you lose some performance down low and a side effect of that will be less bucking since you will be making less power down low and you should be able to tune alot of that out. A buddy of mine was running a pretty large cam and opened the IAC up a bit more in the lower rpms and it seemed to smooth out the driving in traffic.

well i will be using the GMPP intake since it fits better under the cowl and they are the only one with injector bungs for the L92's thus far. prob gonna try it out. thanks for the help.

I tried a 239/248 .619/639 113 on my 402 first time out. Was a little small for my setup, so I went bigger. would probably fit well in that 370. It's for sale by the way with less than 300 miles on it. Have patriot springs too (.650) pm if you're interested.
