Default Deck Thickness on LS7 block.

How much can be safely cut off of the deck of the LS7 block? I need to cut .010" off for a 9.030 deck height for my piston configuration. That much should not be a problem, right?

Any reason you can't run a thinner gasket?
I wouldn't think there would be a problem with cutting the deck height-wise, but it's not really an easy job with iron sleeves on an aluminum block. It's an interrupted cut and tends to smear the steel into the softer aluminum.

I could! Just asking about the thickness and maximum amount that can be cut safely.

The Comstar crank kit that I ordered has Mahle pistons that sit .010" below the deck on a 9.040" deck. To get .040" quench I would have to run a .030" gasket, or either cut the deck .010" and run a .040" gasket. .030" is getting pretty thin for a LS head gasket?

I would accurately measure the current deck height as they vary quite a bit. Then determine what you need.

Thanks!

Yes, my machine shop is going to check it out.

I don't believe cutting .010" will hurt a thing, but I can't seem to find anything on the actual deck thickness of the block.

I can't see where it could hurt a thing.
If 1/10 of 1/10 of an inch made a difference, I believe I'd look for another block
Big and small block cast iron blocks are routinely cut .015 - .025 when zero decking.
I hope you'll report back and let us know what your machinist says, I'd like to know what it specs out to.

I won't get the block until after Christmas, but I will post back when I find out something.

Default deck thickness

The deck thickness on the LS7 block is .550". .010" is nothing to take off. Go ahead and deck the block if you can't find gaskets the thickness you are looking for.
