Default Anyone hear about LSX blocks running hot?

We just finished a 454 in a 2008 Vette and she drives and tuned out very nice. We are still waiting on the break in to dyno it but she feels nice the little I have got in to it. the problem we are having is even though the coolant is staying 199-205 the oil temp is getting in the high 24x's and probably higher if I kept running it. It seems to run away the more you drive it and its not all that hot here right now. The Trans also seems to be running way to warm (220+ F)

Oil level and coolant are both good. Tune is real good (+/- 5% fuel trims, etc)

We're going to need to know more. What radiator? What thermostat? Is your computer tuned to turn the fans on earlier? Are you running an oil cooler? How many quart system are you running?

Does the oil get that hot idling, or only if you're driving it.?

It doesn't matter if you're running an aluminum or a iron block, the more power you're making, the more heat you're going to make. So it only makes sense that if you're running a stock cooling system, that its not going to be enough to really cool things down, and with the motor running hot from more power, esp after doing WOT runs, the oil will run hotter as well. You can run racing oil (VR1 for instance) that is made to combat the effects of hotter temps, and it works well.

Where are your idle pressures after the oil heats up?

We have not seen any temps out of the normal on our motor and we're making well over 1500hp, probably in the 1800-2000hp area with the current tuneup. Motor runs a nice 165-170 during a pass and up the return lane. The fans usually click on at the scales when the engine temps reason 190 and they bring it back down. We're using a 55gpm water pump with a small double pass radiator.

What about the oil temperature? That's what he's talking about.

Do you have really high oil pressure? If so, too tight on the bearing clearances come to mind, as well as tight rod side clearance.

Does it have oil squirters for the valvetrain or pistons? I'm not really familiar with the big LSX builds. If so, the springs get really hot, especially stiff springs, and the runoff oil will be very hot. Same for the pistons under lean cruise... makes the oil hot.

The stock cooling is just fine for any size n/a stroker, daily driver pump gas set-up. My 427 stroker (490 RWHP) runs exactly the same temps as when it was factory stock and my entire cooling system is 100% stock, its also 10+ years old. When I stomp all over it it still never gets hot.

I would look into the cooling system considering the fact that you feel the trans is getting too hot as well.

Sorry guys, I didn't ever check back into this thread. The oil ran HOT during spirited driving but not full throttle. The engine is still breaking in and I probably didn't get into it more than half throttle. It seems like now that it has a good 100 miles on it the problem is gone. I suspect it was just very tight is all.

The coolant never got above 205 degrees. The oil on the other hand ran up to 248F on one occasion.

The oil was straight 30w. We cut the filter open on the first change and she looks good.
